Something You Should Know about Fly Fishing for Crappie

Fly fishing for crappie is a popular game fish sought by fly fishers for their fighting spirit and delicious flavor. They can be found in many parts of the country, so there's a good chance there's a spot near you where you can try your hand at fly fishing for crappie.

When targeting crappie with a fly rod, it's important to use a light line and small flies. A four-pound test line is about right, with flies sized from No. 6 to 10. Be sure to use plenty of split shots to get the fly down deep; crappie often suspends near the bottom in deep water.

Fly fishing for crappie is similar to fishing for bass; only the flies are smaller and more subtle. Crappie will take a variety of flies, but certain types of bugs can attract them better than others. This article will discuss the best types of flies to use when fly fishing for crappie and where to find large quantities of these fish.

What are some good patterns?

Well, that depends on your region. The most productive flies in my region are black woolly buggers with white or chartreuse tails or under-bodies. Woolly buggers are also good because they come in a wide range of sizes, from small (16 & 18) to large (4 & 6). Be sure to have some Clouser Minnows in your fly box, too. These flies imitate small baitfish and work well when fished near the bottom.

Another good pattern is Griffith's Gnat, which can be tied in several colors, but I like to use black or red. This fly is very effective when fished around overhanging vegetation or in other shaded areas.

Where are crappie found?

Crappie is most commonly found near covers such as woody debris, stumps, docks, logs, and overhanging vegetation. They will also congregate around schools of baitfish, so keep an eye out for the tell-tale signs of crappie.

Where are smaller fish abundant?

The best spots to find small fish, like crappie and panfish, is where they will congregate around woody cover. This could be stumps, logs, brush piles, or docks. Areas with regular baitfish activity can also hold some good-sized crappie. Keeping an eye out for areas that hold both types of structure is key.

What types of lures work well?

Crappie love small spoons and jigs with pink or orange-colored tails on sunny days; it may be best to use silver or white colors instead on cloudy days. Crappie will also take various live bait, such as worms, minnows, and crickets. However, using bait often requires a lot of patience because crappie can be very picky eaters at times.

When fly fishing for crappie, a good starting point is to use small black woolly buggers with white or chartreuse tails. Keep an eye out for the tell-tale signs of crappie, and you're sure to catch some.
