1. Small patterns
Trouts are used to eat small natural nymphs, trouts saw them better as a credible and potential meal, and as often with dry flies they select their food wisely, that's why it's important to not fly fish with oversized nymphs, it will maximize your chance if you can practice fly fishing nymph with a 16 or 18 nymph.
It's important to use patterns adapted to the size of the dominant natural nymph population about the spot you're going to fish.

2. Adapt to your environment
Learn about insect's behavior in the current, pay attention on how the flow comes, test your flies and see how it moves. Also pay attention to the vegetation.
Polarized glasses are recommended to see into the water, if you want to catch fish by nymphing you also have to understand and be capable to anticipate their environment.

3. Dead drift
When you're imitating their food with your fly, the dead drift consist to let your fly without any drag from the line and leader, lot of insects are not good swimmers in the current. For insects like caddis are sometimes who are good swimmers, you should add some motions on your flies (caddis, crayfish, sculpins), tight line nymph is a good way to add some movement especially when you're practicing float fishing.

4. Move
It's important to keep moving and to change your position if you're stuck at the same place since few minutes without any strikes. We can't always guess where the fish are exactly and even if you're sure to be in an abundant spot, maybe you're not or fish are not“abundant enough”. If you don't get any results, it’s better for you to move just next to it to cover another part of the water, or even more far away to cover a totally different area.

5. Strike indicators
Detecting strikes is the key so you have to choose w good strike indicators, adapted to your needs, it depends of the spot and the situation when you're fishing but we can easily recommend you to use a colorful indicators except if the water is clear as crystal, otherwise it's better to use weightless yarn indicator or indicator fly however it will be harder to adjust if you plan to cover a lot of water.

6. Target the bottom
Don't be afraid when it comes to fish nymphs deep, near the bottom. It's important to fish deep enough, if you don't get enough strikes the problem could be here, no matter if your fly hit the bottom you have to take it into account and get used to it, more you'll fish near the bottom, more you'll get chance to get strikes.

7. Short the line
To maximize your chance to detect a strike and then set the hook in the right timing. So as we said before we recommend to use a strike indicator, then we can add another advice: short your line as possible. It's better to be close enough to see the strike coming.
It will increase your feeling and you'll be more capable to anticipate it, you'll definitely get more success by this way.
