1. Choosing a rod

The first thing that you need to know is how to select a fly fishing rod. You should select a rod based on the type of fish you want to catch. The different types of fishing rods are classified by rod weight. This does not refer to the physical weight of the rod. Rod weight refers to the weight of the fly line that the rod is made for.

The main function of the fly rod is to cast the line effectively. So a low rod weight is meant for light lines that are designed to catch small fish. A rod with a large weight is designed for heavy lines meant to catch big fish.

You can effectively use a small rod to catch fish such as brook trout. But if you try using the same rod to catch a steelhead, it will most likely snap. When you're choosing a rod, you'll also notice that it is labeled with "action." This refers to the flex characteristics of the rod. Rods that are labeled "fast action" are rather still and flex only at the tip.

Rods that are labeled "medium action" flex in the middle. "Slow action" rods flex from end to end. If you're a beginner and absolutely don't know what rod to get, it is recommended that you get a 4 to 6 weight fly with a medium to fast action. This kind of rod will allow you to better time your casting stroke.

2. Selecting a reel

The next step in the fly fishing line setup process is selecting a reel. Usually, fly reels are labeled according to the size of the rod they are made to be paired with. So if you see a reel labeled 3/4, that reel is designed to work with a 3 or 4 weight rod.

When you're using a small rod, you don't have to use the reel drag that much because small fish are usually pulled in by hand. For larger ford and reels, the reel drag takes on a more active role.

If you are planning to buy a large reel, then you need to check the quality of the reel. It is highly recommended that you get a reel made with machined aluminum with a hard anodized finish and a sealed drag. You should also get a high-quality reel if you're planning to fish in saltwater.

3. Putting it all together

If you were able to buy a rod with alignment dots on the sections then you shouldn't have any problem during the assembly process. You need to insert and twist the fly rod sections together at the same time. As you put together the section, twist them together until they become aligned.

The next thing you need to do is to attach the reel foot to the fly rod reel seat. The position of the reel crank will depend on whether you are right or left-handed. You need to either slide or screw the hood over the reel foot and then tighten securely. Now the fly fishing line setup is complete.
