Can you go Fly Fishing in Slovenia?

December 30, 2019 Fishing Guides Views: 1912

Slovenia has some truly stunning waters, and its government knows to show them off particularly to those looking for fly fishing Slovenia funtivities. So yes. You can.

For a country so small, Slovenia's made up of a disproportionately large, but diverse, number of rivers. From crystal clear waters that allow you to see your target swimming at the bottom of the river, to chalk streams that offer a little more challenge. It's incredibly difficult to pick favorite water because they all offer something. It usually boils down to your state of mind at the moment.

Someone once said that Fly fishing Slovenia's waters are the only guaranteed place you can go fly fish during the early morning hours in chalky waters and fly fish in gin colored waters by noon. And they aren't new at it either. While Slovenia might not be most people's first fly fishing destination, the country began recording fly fishing in Slovenia some 100 years ago. So even if you need local help scouting the area, you'll easily find expert guides.

Where to Go Fly Fishing in Slovenia

The general consensus is that the western part of Slovenia offers the best fly fishing experience. However, even in the west, there are still many options to choose from. Right off the bat, you should definitely check out Soca valley. It's the most popular destination, with good reason. However, because of its popularity, you'll almost always find other anglers doing their thing.

If you're looking for a little more seclusion, but a challenge, go to Idrijca. Sava and Radovna are also prime fly fishing Slovenia waters, but only if you have someone to guide you. The Sava is considered Slovenia's longest alpine river. It splits into two, and the type of fish you catch will be determined by which of the two forks you choose.

Other noteworthy fly fishing Slovenia waters, not necessarily in the west, include Kokra, Sora, Krka, and Unec. Some waters offer more diverse games than others, and this will some times depend on the season you go fly fishing.

When's the Best Time to go Fly Flying in Slovenia?

As with all answers, the answer to this question involves the dreaded "it depends". It depends on what you're hunting, and where you plan on staying for most of the trip. Most people say spring is undoubtedly the best time for anglers - between April and May. The summers also afford a good game. Flying fishing in September's particularly tricky. If you're looking for trophy-sized graylings and pike, wait till fall - October, and November. And if for some reason, you only came to Slovenia to hunt the Huchen, then make your travel plans for December or January.

In essence, you can probably find something good to catch all year round. But if you need to prepare your fly fishing gear before heading out, it might be wise to know which particular fish does well during your vacation period.

What you'll catch While Fly Fishing in Slovenia

Slovenia's home to over dozens of fishes, including the predatory ones. And as you've already seen, what you hook will depend largely on when and where you visit. Here are some fishes that call the rivers and streams of Slovenia their home.

Marble Trout: these are the stars of the occasion. They put up a great fight and will look good while doing so. They're only found in a handful of waters in the world, and Slovenia happens to be smack dap in the middle of their territory. They're typically under 2 feet, but you can get bigger if you're lucky.

Huchen: okay these are even more impressive than marble trouts since they grow to over 4 feet. These bad boys only live in the Danube River and some of its tributaries, so Huchens are some times called Danube salmon.

Graylings: make up for their small sizes with fun colors. You can find them in mountainous waters, but they'll make you sweat for them.

Brown trouts are probably the most "meh" of the fishes in Slovenia, but it's nice for anglers to know they can always hunt something they "know".

As with all fly fishing trips, success will be determined by how prepared you are. So read up as much as you can before booking your trip. Remember Slovenian locals have been doing this for over a century now, so don't hesitate to ask the locals for help.
