Determine hackle size and hook size to use this gauge, the hackle should be measured at the point where it would be cut and tied to the hook.

The feather is bent in a “U”, and the stem held against the lower edge of this card with the fibers extending straight up toward the numbers.

The line that the fiber tip touches is the hook size that the hackle should be tied on.
