It's strange why more fly-fishers don't hang around pools - it's literally where most of the fish will be. Well, you can't exactly tell someone where they should fish, but there are plenty of reasons why the pools are a good choice.
THE PARTS OF A POOL
1) The Head
This is where the movement of water is at its roughest, and surprisingly, this is where you can find the most trout. The big rocks and boulders, along with the heavy gush of running water provide the fish with all that they need to survive: oxygen, nutrients, and security. You can especially find more fish in this section of the pool during the warm summer months because the fish will take advantage of the cooler and more oxygenated water here.
2) The Belly
Fly-fishers who prefer pools will usually hang around in this section. The slower water movement and depth of the belly are reasons why plenty of fish will stay in this area. However, there tend to be a lot of rocks and gravel at the bottom, and since that is also where the food is, trout and other fish will swim down. Because of this, the fish are harder to spot. You might not see them, but they can see you, so approach slowly.
3) The Tail
This section is shallower and it is where the water will trickle down to the next body of water. While you won't find a mass of fish here, it is an advantageous spot for fish to gather food that drifts from one end of the pool to the next. So, you can expect to find a few fish pop up to the surface every once and a while.
REASONS WHY FLY-FISHING POOLS ARE WHERE YOU SHOULD GO
Firstly, there aren't many things that fish need: food, oxygen, and shelter. All of this can be found in pools. The depth of a pool with all its little hiding spots and crevices provides the fish with protection from predators, and especially when they are trying to reproduce. As it is the spot where water moves into and collects, all the little macro-organisms drifting in the water will also collect here, providing the fish with an all-you-can-eat buffet. While a pool may be a collection spot where the water slows down, there is still movement and a continuous supply of freshly oxygenated water so the fish never feel suffocated.
Secondly, while it may seem that all the fish can be found in pools, it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't be a challenge. At the head, the water is still turbulent, and catching a fish will not be an easy task; at the belly, you can definitely make a catch if you can even see any fish; and at the tail, the conditions and odds are not in your favor.
Lastly, pools are a great place for practicing your casting skills, as well as your ability to make a sneaky approach. A single pool offers different water conditions to practice your skills: rushing water and visibility will be your opponents. Also, since the water offers shallowness and depth, depending on the section, you are likely to scare the fish away with every move you make.
At the end of the day, it's up to you personally where you should spend your time fishing. But if you haven't tried the pools yet, it is worth a look.
