Of course there is a plenty of different knots for fly fishing, you should know several of them at least, here we decided to build a list of the most common and useful knots that you have to know how to tie, some of them are of course used by many anglers, and famous in the fly fishing world.

1. The clinch knot

Used by a lot of anglers, when talking about some of the best knot the name of the clinch knot often appears.
Easy and fast to tie, learn how to do a clinch knot is like a fundamental basis for each novice.
How to do it :
- Thread tag end through the eye of hook
- With 4 to 6 inches of tag, wrap around the main line 5 to 7 times
- Loop tag through the small loop formed at the eye on the hook
- Lubricate and draw tight.
- Clip tag end 1/16 to 1/8 from knot
Be careful and pull only the long end when you’re tightening it, otherwise the fly has a risk to pop off during your cast or when you got a fish on it.
2. The surgeon’s loop

First step, attach the baking to the reel, by making an 8 inches long loop. Then stick it on the reel, into the front, over the top of the spool arbor and back out through the opening which it entered. Place the loop on the spool and draw it tightly. When you reel, the loop locks against itself . It is a very secure way to attach the backing.
Instead of making a loop and passing the ends twice, go around twice, then go through the ends once. Twice and once is identical to once and twice. The double turn and the mat are easy to do on your fingers.

3. The blood knot

This one is not about something easy to learn, you need to practice if you want to get a correct result.
Mostly used for tying leaders or attaching tippet to a leader, here is how to tie it:
- Overlap two similar sized lines. Be careful here because the knot doesn’t like tightening up if the lines are significantly different in diameter.
- Wrap or twist one tag end around the other line 5 turns
- Bring the tag end back between the two lines at the start of the wrap.
- Repeat this same process with the other tag end.
- Lubricate the knot.
- Pull the tag ends and running lines in opposite directions
- Trim tag ends close.

4. The nail knot

Mostly used to attach the backing to the fly line and the fly line to the leader, the nail knot is one of the most frequently used fly fishing knot.
The nail knot is often appreciated cause also seen as a polyvalent knot, with a lot of different uses.

How to tie it step by step :
- Have 10 inches of tag line hanging out of the U tip of the nail knot tool.
- Hook the tag end into the fork of the tool
- Wrap the tag end 5 to 8 times around the tool
- Slide the tag end through the U of the tool toward the tip.
- Approximately 8 inches of tag should be hanging out of the tip of the tool.
- Insert the fly line into the tip of the tool approximately an inch
- Quickly pull the tag and the wrapping off the tool.
- Dampen or lubricate the loose knot.
- Pull the tag and running line until knot is tight.
- Trim tag and stub of fly line.
